Janakpur is the  headquarter of Dhanusa  District and is one of the religious pilgrimage site situated about one  hundred and twenty-three kilometer south-east of Kathmandu.The  birthplace of Janaki (Sita), the consort of Lord Ram makes it popular.  Many pilgrims come to pay their respects to Ram and Sita who are the  main religious attraction in Janakpur through out the year.The city is  fully covered by Visitors and Worshippers during the festival of Bibah  Panchami.
This place is popular for  its own art and culture.Traditional art drawn by Maithili women  especially on pottery attracts everyone.The Janaki Temple situated at  the center of city is the main point of attraction in Janakpur.The  temple was constructed in 187.The temple is a three-storey building and  has sixty rooms. This is the largest temple in Nepal.
Beside  of temple of Janaki. Janakpur is also popular for the historical and  mythologically important ponds.It is said that around one hundred and  fifteen ancient ponds are situated in janakpur.Among them Ganga Sagar,  Dhanusha Sagar and Parshuram Kunda are few.According to the great Hindu  epic Ramayan, ram strings a bow of Lord Shiva and the bow breaks into  three pieces during this process.Among the three pieces of the bow one  piece flies to heaven another piece flies to present day Dhanushdham  which is fourty kilometer away from Janakpur and the third piece falls  down into the land making a huge pond called Dhanush Sagar.
